Public transit
challenges in a
post-pandemic world:
2020 Forecast Series

Office workers are worried about far more than their physical safety at the workplace, they’re also concerned about how they’ll actually get to the office. Find out how to address and alleviate those concerns.

Millions of North Americans rely on public transit to get to the office, or at least they did before the coronavirus pandemic. Now that restaurants, offices and other public spaces are starting to reopen, office workers are beginning to wonder how COVID-19 may have permanently changed both their workspace and their ability to take public transportation to that space.

Results from JLL’s recent Workplace Experience Survey show that public transit is the top concern amidst employees and their companies during this re-entry return to work period. And since nearly a third of North America’s office inventory is concentrated in just a dozen transit-oriented markets, it’s a pressing concern for everyone including city leaders.

How clean and sanitized will those buses and trains be? How crowded? How long will the commute take? Which markets will be most affected by these new challenges?

New York leads weekday transit usage substantially,
but many other markets exceed 1 million per day
